If you are shopping for a new air conditioner, heat pump or furnace, you will run into Goodman and Daikin side by side, often with very similar model numbers. That is not a coincidence. Daikin, the Japanese HVAC manufacturer, bought Goodman in 2012, and both brands are now built at Daikin’s Texas Technology Park near Houston. So the real question is not “which company is better” but “which product line fits my house and budget.”
What is the same
- Engineering and factory. Goodman and Daikin residential split systems share a lot of engineering, components and production.
- Refrigerant. Both brands’ current residential condensers and heat pumps use R-32 refrigerant (more on that in our Goodman air conditioner guide).
- Efficiency tiers. Both offer single-stage, two-stage and variable-speed equipment across the usual SEER2 tiers.
What is different
- Warranty terms. This is usually the biggest difference. Daikin-branded equipment often carries longer warranty terms than the comparable Goodman model. Warranty length depends on the exact model and on registering the equipment after installation, so compare the warranty listed on each product page before you buy.
- Positioning and price. Goodman is the value-focused line; Daikin is positioned as the premium line. For the same capacity and efficiency, Daikin typically costs more.
- Top-tier features. Daikin’s highest-end inverter systems add features and controls that go beyond Goodman’s lineup.
Which one should you buy?
Choose Goodman if you want a proven, widely serviced system at the lowest cost per ton, and a standard parts warranty is enough for you. Most of our system sales are Goodman for exactly that reason. Start with the Goodman air conditioners or Goodman heat pumps.
Choose Daikin if you plan to stay in the home a long time and the longer warranty or premium inverter features are worth the higher upfront price. See our honest Daikin review or shop Daikin equipment.
Also consider Solace, Buy Comfort Direct’s own brand. Solace equipment is built from the same Goodman-engineered platform and is usually the lowest price for a matched system. Browse Solace systems.
Things that matter more than the brand
- Correct sizing. An oversized or undersized system will disappoint no matter whose name is on it. Run our free HVAC sizing tool.
- A matched system. Pair the outdoor unit with the indoor coil or air handler it is rated with so you actually get the listed SEER2.
- A good installer. Have a licensed HVAC contractor install the equipment and register the warranty. Goodman, for example, requires registration within 60 days of installation to get the full parts warranty.
