About the GD9S960403BN

Where the GD9S960403BN fits

A gas furnace is the heating side of a ducted system and, in an air-conditioner-plus-furnace layout, its blower also moves the cooled air in summer. Sizing the GD9S960403BN is about matching input BTU to the home’s heat loss and matching the blower to the cooling tonnage of the coil above it. AFUE tells you how much of each fuel dollar becomes heat: an 80% furnace vents through a metal flue, while 90%+ condensing furnaces vent in PVC and need a condensate drain.

Stages and blower type change comfort more than the AFUE number does. A two-stage or modulating furnace runs longer at low fire, which evens out temperatures room to room, and a variable-speed ECM blower cuts electrical use and noise while improving summer dehumidification when the same blower runs the air conditioning.

What to check before you order

• Input BTU and AFUE against a heat-loss calculation, not the old furnace’s label.
• Blower size (the tonnage the cabinet is rated for) against the cooling coil.
• Orientation: upflow, downflow or horizontal, and the cabinet width against the coil.
• Gas type: natural gas from the factory; propane requires the correct conversion kit.
• Venting and combustion air for your location, and a 115 V circuit.

Installation and service notes

Furnace installation is gas, venting and combustion-air work as much as it is ductwork: the vent size and material, the gas line size, the condensate routing on a condensing model and the blower speed taps all come from the installation manual, and the unit should be commissioned with a combustion analyzer and a temperature-rise check. Keep the return filter sized for the blower’s rated airflow.
