A split system has two halves: the outdoor unit (an air conditioner or a heat pump) and the indoor side (a gas furnace, an electric air handler, or just a coil sitting on an existing furnace). Pick what you're replacing.

Tip. If you only replace the outdoor unit, the old indoor coil usually won't match the new refrigerant or efficiency rating, and the system won't perform or carry its full warranty. Replacing both halves together as a matched system is the safe bet.
