Start with the kind of system you have now. Look outside: if there's one big box with ducts running into the house and nothing inside, it's a packaged unit. If there's an outdoor unit plus a furnace or air handler inside, it's a split system. If there are wall units in the rooms and no ductwork, it's a mini split.
