What Is R-410A, and Why Is It Being Phased Down?

R-410A is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) blend that took over the residential market in the 2000s as the ozone-depleting R-22 was phased out. It solved the ozone problem — R-410A does not damage the ozone layer — but it created a different one. Two details in that schedule deserve emphasis. First, the supply never goes to zero — even in 2036 and beyond, HFCs will still be produced for servicing existing equipment. Second, the phasedown applies to virgin refrigerant production and imports. Reclaimed and recycled refrigerant is not capped, and the reclamation industry has been scaling up specifically to keep older systems serviceable as virgin supply tightens. The R-22 phaseout followed the same arc: prices spiked, reclamation grew, and systems kept running for years longer than the doomsayers predicted.

What Changed in 2026: The Installation Deadline That Went Away

Alongside the supply phasedown, the EPA's Technology Transitions rule set GWP limits for new equipment: residential and light commercial air conditioners and heat pumps made or imported after January 1, 2025 must use refrigerants with a GWP below 700. The original rule also included a second deadline that caused enormous stress in the supply chain: R-410A split systems already manufactured before the 2025 cutoff had to be installed by January 1, 2026.
