HVAC has its own language, and like most trade vocabularies, it's a mix of useful technical precision and acronym soup that can leave anyone outside the industry feeling lost. Standing in front of a contractor talking about SEER ratings, AFUE percentages, evaporator coils, and refrigerant charges — and being expected to make confident purchasing decisions — is a lot to ask of someone who's never had a reason to learn the terminology.

Core System Components

Air handler. The indoor part of a forced-air system that moves air through the ductwork. Contains the blower, evaporator coil (on AC and heat pump systems), and often the filter housing. In gas-furnace homes, the furnace serves as the air handler.

Blower. The fan inside the air handler that pushes conditioned air through the ducts and into the home. Most common types are PSC (Permanent Split Capacitor) and ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor).

Compressor. The heart of an air conditioner or heat pump. It pressurizes refrigerant gas, raising its temperature so heat can be exchanged with the outside air. The single most expensive component to replace in most systems.

Condenser. The outdoor unit of a split-system AC or heat pump. Houses the compressor, condenser coil, and outdoor fan. Releases heat absorbed from inside the home to the outdoor air (in cooling mode).

Condenser coil. The coil inside the outdoor unit. In cooling mode, hot pressurized refrigerant releases its heat through this coil to the outdoor air.

Evaporator coil. The indoor coil where refrigerant absorbs heat from the air being conditioned. Located in the air handler or directly above a furnace.

Furnace. The component that generates heat by burning fuel (natural gas, propane, oil) or with electric resistance. Different from a heat pump, which moves heat rather than creating it.

Heat exchanger. Inside a gas furnace, this is the metal chamber where combustion happens. Air passes around (but not through) the heat exchanger, picking up heat without picking up combustion gases. A cracked heat exchanger is a serious safety hazard.

Heat pump. A system that can both heat and cool by moving heat in either direction. In summer, it works like an AC. In winter, it reverses to pull heat from outside air into the home.

Mini-split. A ductless system that pairs an outdoor heat pump or AC with one or more indoor "head" units. Each head conditions a single zone or room.

Plenum. The large box at the supply or return side of an air handler where the ductwork connects.

Refrigerant. The fluid that circulates through the system, absorbing and releasing heat as it changes between liquid and gas. Common types: R-22 (legacy), R-410A (current most common), R-32 and R-454B (lower-GWP next generation).

Reversing valve. The component inside a heat pump that flips the direction of refrigerant flow between heating and cooling modes.

Thermostat. The control device that tells the HVAC system when to run. Ranges from simple mechanical units to learning smart thermostats with energy reports and app control.

Service Parts You'll Hear About

Capacitor. A small cylindrical component that stores electrical charge to help start and run motors. Capacitors fail often, especially in hot weather. Replacement is one of the most common HVAC service calls.

Contactor. A heavy-duty electrical switch that controls power to the compressor and outdoor fan. Like capacitors, contactors are routine wear-and-tear parts.

Flame sensor. A thin metal rod that detects whether the furnace burner is actually burning. Dirty flame sensors are the #1 cause of furnaces that start and then shut off shortly after.

Hot surface igniter (HSI). The ceramic component in modern furnaces that glows red-hot to ignite the gas. Most common ignition style in residential furnaces today.

Inducer motor. A small fan inside a furnace that pulls combustion gases out through the flue. The first thing that runs when a furnace starts a heating cycle.

Limit switch. A safety component that shuts off the furnace if internal temperatures get too high.

Pressure switch. A safety component that confirms proper airflow before allowing gas to ignite in the furnace.

Run capacitor. A capacitor that helps the motor keep running smoothly. Often paired with a start capacitor in dual-capacitor units.

Start capacitor. A capacitor that gives a motor the extra jolt it needs to start spinning.

TXV (Thermostatic Expansion Valve). A precision valve that controls how much refrigerant flows into the evaporator coil. Modern systems use TXVs for better efficiency than the older "fixed orifice" approach.

Efficiency Ratings (The Acronym Pile)

AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency). Measures gas or oil furnace efficiency as a percentage. 80% AFUE means 80% of the fuel becomes heat for the home, and 20% is lost. Modern condensing furnaces hit 90–98% AFUE.

COP (Coefficient of Performance). A real-time efficiency measurement for heat pumps. A COP of 3.0 means three units of heat output per one unit of electrical input. Higher is better.

EER / EER2 (Energy Efficiency Ratio). Cooling efficiency at a single steady-state condition (95°F outdoor). The "2" version reflects updated 2023 test procedures.

HSPF / HSPF2 (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor). Measures heat pump heating efficiency over a season. Higher is better. Current minimum is 7.5 HSPF2; top-end cold-climate heat pumps reach 10+.

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value). Air filter efficiency rating from 1 (basic) to 20 (HEPA-equivalent). Most residential systems are happy at MERV 8–11.

SEER / SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio). The headline cooling efficiency rating. Higher is better. Current U.S. minimum is 14.3 SEER2 in most of the country; high-performance units run 18–22+.

Refrigerant Terms

Charge. The amount of refrigerant in the system. Systems are designed to operate with a specific charge — overcharged or undercharged systems both perform poorly.

Line set. The pair of insulated copper lines (one liquid line, one suction line) that connect the indoor and outdoor units.

Pressure (low side / high side). Refrigerant operates at different pressures on different parts of the cycle. Techs measure both to diagnose system performance.

R-22. Older refrigerant, phased out of production in the U.S. in 2010. Systems using R-22 are still serviceable but increasingly expensive to charge.

R-410A. The most common current residential refrigerant. Being phased down in new equipment starting 2025 in favor of lower-GWP alternatives, but existing systems and parts will be serviceable for many years.

R-32 / R-454B. Lower global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants replacing R-410A in new equipment.

Subcooling. A measurement of how much the refrigerant has cooled below its condensing temperature. Used to diagnose refrigerant charge on TXV systems.

Superheat. A measurement of how much the refrigerant has been heated above its evaporating temperature. Used to diagnose refrigerant charge on fixed-orifice systems.

Airflow and Ductwork

CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute). A measurement of airflow. Most residential systems are designed for around 400 CFM per ton of cooling.

Damper. A movable plate inside the ductwork that controls airflow to different zones or rooms.

Duct. The metal, flexible, or fiberglass channels that carry air between the air handler and registers throughout the home.

Manual D. The ACCA-published standard for designing ductwork to match a home's heating and cooling needs.

Return air. The air being pulled back from the home into the air handler to be re-conditioned.

Return grille. The vent (usually larger) where air is pulled into the return duct system.

Static pressure. The resistance to airflow inside the duct system. Too-high static pressure indicates problems — restricted filters, undersized ducts, closed dampers, etc.

Supply air. The conditioned air being pushed from the air handler out to the rooms.

Supply register. The vent in each room where conditioned air enters. Usually adjustable.

Trunk line. The main duct that runs from the air handler and branches into smaller ducts for individual rooms.

Sizing and Design Terms

BTU (British Thermal Unit). A unit of heat energy. HVAC equipment capacity is measured in BTU/hr (BTUs per hour).

Design conditions. The outdoor temperatures used to size HVAC equipment, based on local climate data. For example: 95°F summer / 15°F winter for a moderate climate.

Latent load. The portion of cooling load related to removing humidity from the air. Important in humid climates.

Load calculation. The engineering process of determining how much heating and cooling a specific home requires.

Manual J. The ACCA-published standard for performing residential load calculations. The proper way to size HVAC equipment.

Manual S. The ACCA-published standard for selecting equipment that matches the calculated load.

Sensible load. The portion of cooling load related to dry temperature (as opposed to humidity).

Ton. A unit of cooling capacity. One ton equals 12,000 BTU/hr. A "3-ton AC" is rated to remove 36,000 BTU/hr of heat.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Terms

Dehumidifier (whole-house). A unit that removes humidity from the air independently of the AC. Useful in humid climates, especially during mild weather when the AC barely runs.

ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilator). A ventilation system that brings in fresh outdoor air while transferring both heat and humidity between the incoming and outgoing airstreams.

HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air). A filter standard requiring 99.97% efficiency at 0.3 microns. True HEPA filtration in whole-house HVAC requires bypass systems due to high pressure drop.

Humidifier (whole-house). A unit attached to the duct system that adds moisture to indoor air during dry conditions.

HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator). Similar to an ERV but only transfers heat, not humidity. Best for cold, dry climates.

PM2.5. Particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns. Small enough to enter the bloodstream when inhaled. Captured by MERV 13+ filters.

UV-C light. Ultraviolet light installed in the air handler that kills bacteria, viruses, and mold on contact. Often installed at the evaporator coil.

VOC (Volatile Organic Compound). Gases emitted by paints, cleaners, furniture, and building materials. A major component of poor indoor air quality.

Combustion and Safety Terms

Carbon monoxide (CO). Colorless, odorless gas produced by incomplete combustion. Detectable only with a CO detector. A cracked heat exchanger can leak CO into the home.

Combustion air. Air supplied to a gas furnace or water heater for the burning process. Without adequate combustion air, the appliance can't burn cleanly.

Flue. The pipe that vents combustion gases from a furnace or boiler to the outdoors.

Power vent. A combustion venting system that uses a fan to push exhaust gases out, allowing horizontal venting through a sidewall rather than a traditional chimney.

Pilot light. The small flame that ignites the main burner in older gas appliances. Replaced by hot surface igniters in most modern equipment.

Thermocouple. A safety component in older standing-pilot systems that confirms the pilot is lit before allowing gas to flow to the main burner.

Smart Tech and Modern Terms

C-wire (Common wire). The 24-volt power wire required by most smart thermostats. Older systems often don't have one — adapters or "power extender kits" can solve this.

Communicating system. A system in which the indoor unit, outdoor unit, and thermostat communicate via a proprietary data signal. Often used with variable-speed equipment.

Geofencing. A smart thermostat feature that detects when you're home or away based on your phone's location.

Inverter (or variable-speed compressor). A compressor that can run at variable speeds instead of just on/off. Inverters provide much better efficiency and comfort.

Smart thermostat. A thermostat with Wi-Fi, app control, learning capabilities, and integration with smart home systems.

Variable-speed. Equipment that can operate at multiple capacities, ramping up and down based on demand rather than running at full blast or shutting off completely.

Zoning system. A multi-zone HVAC control system that uses dampers and multiple thermostats to condition different parts of the home independently.

Industry Acronyms Worth Knowing

ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America). The trade association that publishes the Manual J, S, and D standards.

AHRI (Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute). The industry body that certifies equipment performance ratings.

ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers). Publishes engineering standards used across the HVAC industry.

DOE. The U.S. Department of Energy. Sets federal HVAC minimum efficiency standards.

EPA. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Regulates refrigerant handling. EPA 608 certification is required for handling refrigerants.

HVAC. Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. The entire industry abbreviation.

HVACR. Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration. Often includes commercial refrigeration.

NATE (North American Technician Excellence). The most widely recognized HVAC technician certification organization.
